Funeral Service

Education and Training

Education and licensing requirements vary by state, so be certain to check for specific details with the board of funeral directors in the state in which you wish to practice.  The basic requirements in Pennsylvania include:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • An associate degree in funeral service education.
The Associate in Applied Science in Funeral Service Education is a 92 credit program.  It takes most students 2-3 years to complete. Northampton Community College Funeral Service Education is accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE).
  • A resident internship ranging from one year.
  • Passing the national board and state licensing examination.

    • All students of Funeral Service Education sit for the National Board Examination of the International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards prior to graduation.  The annual passage rate of first-time takers on the National Board Examination (NBE) for the most recent three-year period for this institution and all ABFSE accredited funeral service education programs is posted on the ABFSE web site (www.abfse.org).
