Program Description

Diagnostic Medical Sonography is an allied health profession that uses high frequency sound waves to create cross-sectional images of the patient's anatomy. Sonographers work in professional harmony with both the radiologist and the clinical physician. The sonographer assists the physician in gathering pertinent anatomical, physiological, and/or pathological sonographic data and images necessary to diagnose a variety of conditions and diseases. Sonographers must demonstrate a high degree of motivation and good judgement and be able to work independently. The sonographer must work well with other health care professionals in providing quality service to the patient and must demonstrate empathy and ethical behavior in the practice of the profession. Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS) are individuals who have successfully completed the appropriate physical principles and instrumentation examination and at least one of the correponding speciality examinations which includes: Abdomen (AB), Breast (BR), Neurosonolgy (NE), Obstetrics/Gynecology (OB/GYN) or Ophthalmology (OP).
