Campus Safety and Emergency Planning

NCC is concerned about the safety and welfare of all individuals who study or work at the College or who visit the campus. The security information report - as required by state and federal agencies - contains crime statistics relative to incidents that occur at the College. You may request a copy of the most recent report by contacting Admissions or the Director of Public Safety.

Safety involves personal responsibility. Students, faculty, and staff must be conscious of the ways in which they contribute to a safe campus and must take steps to prepare themselves in case of an emergency. Preparation includes informing yourself of the following:

  • Be aware of the closest emergency exit. Every classroom has a poster that contains emergency procedures and a map with the closest exit on it. You will need to know the closest exit in the case of an emergency evacuation.

  • If you hear alarms go off, exit the building you are in immediately in a quiet and orderly fashion and head to the far areas of the parking lot.

  • You can reach Security directly at 610-861-5588. Program this number into your cell phone. Remember it is a radio link and you will hear a series of beeps before your call is answered. At the Monroe campus, call 911 if you are not able to contact a staff member immediately.

  • If you notice something unusual or suspicious on campus you should call security directly or contact the Dean of Students, Mardi McGuire-Closson at 610-861-4558. If you are uncomfortable with either of these options, you can call NCC’s Crime Prevention Hotline anonymously at 610-861-4129. At Monroe – contact Security or the Enrollment Office personnel.

  • If you hear someone threaten to harm another individual you should immediately report the incident to Security or the Student Affairs staff. If unsure if it is a reportable offense, please err on the side of caution and report what you know so staff can investigate the situation.

  • If you witness a medical emergency, call 911 and then notify Security. Do not delay getting a medical response.

What will the College do to communicate with you in emergency situations?

The form of communication will depend on the type of situation, whether it be a natural disaster, fire, bomb threat, electrical outage, or violent crime on campus. All of these scenarios will require different responses from the College but communication will be made in one or more of the following ways:

  • Alarms will sound in buildings requiring evacuation. Staff may be dispersed to deliver messages or information about the type of emergency and procedures you should follow.

  • E-mails with updates, detailed information, or warnings will be sent to all students, faculty, and staff. In the event of an emergency, please check your NCC e-mail address if you can find a safe and secure place to do so.

  • Phone messages may be delivered to home phone numbers. The College is currently looking into communicating important messages to students through cell phone. If and when this plan is in place you will be notified.

  • NCC’s website, www.northampton.edu, will post updates and current information. If the server is down (for example, if there is a power outage) you can go to NCC’s backup site: www.nccemergency.org. Please bookmark both sites so you can find them quickly.

NCC does have emergency plans in place and is continually updating plans and procedures. If you would like more information, contact Marvin Gruber in Security or Mardi McGuire-Closson, VP for Student Affairs.
