Tom Tenges
received a bachelor’s degree in English from Moravian College in 1970. He attended East Stroudsburg University where he studied educational administration in 1972.
Tom is the executive director of the Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges (LVAIC) in Bethlehem since 1999. He is the chief executive and ex officio member of the governing board of a not-for-profit consortium established by six colleges and universities in eastern Pennsylvania. Tom directs a wide variety of collaborative programs whose purpose is to enhance educational opportunities for students, provide for professional development and collegiality among peer groups of faculty and administrators, engender cost savings and operational efficiencies, market and promote attributes of the region, and promote the interests of the member institutions at the local, state and national levels. He also supervises a small staff and coordinates the activities of more than 50 peer meeting groups.
Prior to his current position, he was the executive director of institutional advancement at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, the vice president of The Woodring-Roberts Corporation in Bethlehem, the director of the Valley Health Foundation in Easton, vice president, director of development and associate director of development at Moravian College in Bethlehem.
Tom has served as a member of NCC’s Foundation Board of Directors since 1990. From his initial Foundation Board meeting, Tom was a believer in the mission of Northampton. During his tenure on the Board he was chair of the annual fund from 1994 to 1997, chaired the Board Recruitment and Development Committee for several years and was the co-chair for the faculty and staff side of the Foundation’s Capital Campaign. In addition to his service on the Foundation Board, Tom’s commitment to education includes the Harry B. Tenges Scholarship Endowment established in honor of his father. The primary purpose of the endowment is to benefit students in NCC’s automotive program.
Tom has served his community in numerous ways including: a member of the Association of Consortium Leaders, and Board of Trustees at Moravian College, a member of the Board of Directors and the former president of the Moravian College Alumni Association, the Board of Directors of the former Bethlehem Area Chamber of Commerce and Historic Bethlehem, Inc.; the former president of the Sun Inn Preservation Association and Moravian Hall Square, and the former president of the Boards of Trustees and Elders at Central Moravian Church.
Tom lives in Bethlehem and enjoys biking, landscaping, reading, hiking, traveling, cooking, weight training, architecture and preservation.
