Advising Tips for New Students
- Make sure you have filled in an NCC application with the Admissions Office and paid the $25 application fee.
- If necessary, take the English and/or math placement test in the Learning Center. See the Placement Policy and Schedule to determine if testing is necessary and availability.
- Decide if you want to be a full-time or part-time student. Make sure you are honest with yourself about your other commitments (work, family) and don't over-commit yourself. As a guideline, you can expect to spend an additional 2-3 hours outside of class for each hour in class.
- Apply for Financial Aid if necessary.
- Meet with an advisor to schedule classes and discuss your educational goals. If you are new for the Fall semester, you will do this at New Student Orientation in the summer. If you are new for the Spring semester, you will meet with an advisor on a walk-in basis. Click here to see the walk-in advising hours and telephone number for appointments.
- Pay careful attention to course prerequisites.
- Once you have a signed and completed schedule, bring it to the Records Office in the Student Enrollment Center to officially register.
- After registration, you can go to the NCC Bookstore and purchase your textbooks and any other supplies you might need. Do not write in them until you have been in class a week. In case you decide to drop the class you will want to be able to return the books.
- Remember to pay your tuition by the deadline date. See the Academic Calendar for tuition due dates. Failure to do this will result in being dropped from all your registered classes. The chance of obtaining the same schedule will be slim since many classes will be closed at that point.
- Full-time students will be assigned an Academic Advisor early in the semester. Be sure to make an appointment to meet with your advisor before planning a schedule for the next semester. Your advisor will be the connection between you and a satisfying academic experience at NCC.
- Part-time students are not automatically assigned an advisor. You can request one by contacting the Advising and Transfer Office.
