Parent FAQ's - Questions frequently asked by parents

1.  I called with questions regarding my daughter/son's account and was not given the information due to a Federal Privacy Law.  What is that about?

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) limits the type of information we can provide to anyone other than the student, including parents.

Have your son/daughter make the request directly.

Please click here to find out more about FERPA.

2.  I paid for my son/daughter's tuition and he/she later received financial aid.  Will I get my money back?

Refunds are always made payable to the student, regardless of any third party payments made to the student account, except payments made through a parent plus loan or a contract or purchase order with NCC.  Since we have no knowledge of the personal arrangement made between the student and a third party benefactor, we cannot assume that a refund should be paid to anyone other than the student.  The arrangement to return funds paid on a student's behalf is between the student and the parent, guardian, or other person who made payment on the student's behalf.

3.  I took out a parent plus loan for my child, where does the money go?

All financial aid funds received by NCC, including parent plus loans, are applied to the student account, less any origination fees charged by the lender.  If a credit balance results on the student account, funds from a parent plus loan are refunded first to the parent, up to the amount of the plus loan.

Parent refund checks are mailed to the parent's address.  Please make sure NCC has your most current address in our computer system.

Any remaining credit is refunded to the student.

4We applied for financial aid--why did we receive a bill?

You may have received a bill for several reasons:

-If your child's NCC financial aid application was received after the March 31 deadline, the aid may not be processed by the tuition due date.  If your child's award letter is not received by the tuition due date, then we recommend your child enroll in the tuition payment plan.  The plan will be adjusted after the award is received and any credit balance will be refunded to the student.

-Your financial aid may not cover the bill in full.  Any unmet balance must be paid in full or put on a tuition payment plan prior to the tuition due date.

5. The financial aid award is greater than the semester bill, can the excess amount of aid be used to purchase books?

If the student account has a credit balance from excess financial aid award (aid must be awarded), you can spend 50% of the credit balance at the bookstore for required textbooks beginning one week before the semester start date.

Student must go to the bookstore with their a Student Photo ID or valid PA photo ID and their Tuition Bill/Schedule -- both will be required.  If purchases are in excess of the aid amount you can spend, the balance must be paid for out-of-pocket.

6.  I would like to put funds on account for my child to use in the cafeteria and bookstore.  Can I do that?

YES - you can open a FLEX account for your child with a minimum payment of $25.  Funds can be added at any time and the account is fully refundable if your child leaves NCC and closes the account.  Click here for more information.

7.  My health insurance company requires proof that my child is a full-time student.  Where do I get that?

Contact the Record's Office and request a letter to be sent to your insurance company.
