Disability Services - Assistive Technology
NCC's Adaptive Computer Lab, located in the Disability Services area, is specifically designed to support students with disabilities. In addition, assistive technology and supports are also provided to students within the classroom environment who are taking computer intensive classes. Additional equipment and technology is also available to students in the Paul and Harriet Mack Library and at NCC's Monroe campus in Tannersville, PA.
We are pleased with the innovative programs and equipment we have to offer to support NCC students. The Adaptive Computer Lab support specialized software programs that include screen reader and screen magnification programs, voice generated word processing programs, word prediction programs, visual-conceptualization graphic organizers, Braille printers and Braille translation software, virtual reality mouse, dictation programs that provide speak to text and sign language interpretation, and on-screen keyboards. These devices include:
- Dragon Naturally Speaking Mobile and Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred - voice generated word processing software
- Duxbury Braille Translator and the Paragon Braille Printer - converts printed documents to Braille and prints in Braille
- Inspiration - a graphic organizer that allows student to think and learn visually as well as convert graphics to outline format
- Kurzweil 1000 and Kurzweil 3000 - reading systems that convert printed material into speech; includes highlighting features, note taking systems, a talking dictionary and word prediction features
- Supernova for Windows - screen reading and magnification program
- Virtually Reality Mouse - designed for visually impaired to "feel" computer screen, document, etc. Used in conjunction with Supernova.
- WiVik 2 - on-screen keyboard for individuals with mobility impairments
- iCommunicator - a software program that provides for speech to text and speech to sign language on-screen interpretation
Other featured equipment includes assorted track balls, "Big Keys" keyboard, talking calculator, lap top computer for in class use, FM Listening system, Easy Cat Mouse, hand-held mouse, bilingual speaking dictionary, adjustable stations at all sites, closed caption decoders, variable speed tape recorders and numerous academic software programs.
