Organizational Structure
The Center for Adult Literacy & Basic Workforce Development serves over 3800 adults each year. The Center is one of the largest departments in the community education division of Northampton Community College. The Center's director, William R. Schaffer, M. Ed. (wschaffer@northampton.edu), reports to the Vice President of Community Education, Dr. Paul Pierpoint (ppierpoint@northampton.edu).
Mission Statement
The mission of the Center for Adult Literacy & Basic Workforce Development is to help adults to develop the literacy skills necessary to function as family members, workers, community members, and lifelong learners. We do this by providing accessible, high quality educational programs that include basic literacy and numeracy skills, workplace literacy, information literacy, health literacy, computer literacy, financial literacy, and critical literacy. In the design, implementation, and assessment of our programs, we strive to promote strength-based approaches that value the multiple literacies and diversity of our adult learners.
Funding
The Center for Adult Literacy & Basic Workforce Development is funded primarily through state and federal grants. Section 231 and Act 143 funds from the Pennsylvania Department of Education as well as EARN monies from the Department of Public Welfare constitute the bulk of the Center's funding. These funds are supplemented by contracted training and special project grants.
