Family Literacy

Family Literacy is a comprehensive, holistic approach to education in which parent and child learn and grow together. Education opportunities of families are improved by integrating early childhood and adult education into a unified program.

Family Literacy programs address the literacy needs of the family. They also promote parents' involvement in their children's education. Parents are encouraged as their children's first and most powerful influence on their academic success. A Family Literacy program is made up of four components:

  • Adult Education
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Parenting Education
  • Interactive Literacy Activities Time (ILA)

The Family Literacy program requires intensive participation to yield maximum results for parents and children. Year-round classes are offered five days a week. There is also a summer reading component that has a strong relationship with the local libraries and includes a book club, special events, and story hours.

Northampton Community College runs Family Literacy programs in 3 counties. To find out more about how to enroll in Family Literacy classes in your area, contact our family literacy staff directly by using the information on the contact us page.
