Lineworker 'Classroom'

Northampton Community College can prepare students for entry level line work in the electrical or telecommunications industries. Qualified workers in this field are in-demand, and this hands-on course is taught by instructors with lineworker experience. This is a noncredit program with 375 hours of instruction over a 12-week period. 300 of those hours will include outdoor hands-on experience in the training area behind Hartzell Technology Hall on the Bethlehem Campus.

Training - Phase 1

The objective of the lineworker program is to provide an opportunity for students to obtain employment as a lineworker trainee and enter a meaningful and rewarding career. This is accomplished with the use of proven training methods which will include climbing and rigging. Academic training will include basic electricity and electrical systems, grounding, transformers, material identification, live-line tools and metering. Students will also be introduced to the various elements of accident prevention, including safety rule and the proper care, use and storage of tools and equipment.

Tuition & Materials

The full cost of the program is $6775.00 Students are required to have their own body belt, climber set and gloves; they can be purchased through our vendor for about $1200.00 (price subject to change). The program is approved for WIOA and IAA training funds. Contact your local CareerLink to see if you are eligible.

Outcome

After completion of NCC's 12-week program, students will be able to safely and efficiently climb 40' utility poles, construct assemblies while on poles, use a variety of hand tools, and understand the basics of electricity. Successful completion of the 12-week program enables students to become lineworker trainees for local electric and communication companies, where trainees would be required to pass a physical and drug screening.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median pay for line installers and repairers is around $74,530 per year.* Telecommunications equipment installers and repairers make around $60,370 per year.*
