Ayla Genesky, early childhood education student, found her path towards teaching at Northampton Community College (NCC).
Initially thrust into virtual learning due to the constraints of the pandemic, Genesky discovered a newfound fondness for the flexibility and autonomy it offered, relishing the freedom to tackle assignments at her own pace.
The transformation over her two-year tenure at NCC was evident, not just in academic prowess but also in personal growth. Genesky cherished the guidance and support of her cooperative teachers, who nurtured her confidence and validated her abilities, fostering an environment where her teaching skills flourished.
“One of the teachers told me, ‘It takes a caring person to interact and build relationships with the kids. You have done that!’ It really meant a lot to me to know I’m wanted and accepted. They were supportive and encouraging with my lesson plans. I will never forget them and how much they’ve done to help me grow.”
Genesky's commitment to understanding and aiding children extended beyond the classroom. She’s volunteered her time to various endeavors like homework clubs, Special Olympics, and Big Brother, Big Sister programs. Her experiences with the children in Special Olympics were particularly impactful. “The kids in Special Olympics really opened my eyes. I had one child who really changed me. He was a seven-year-old boy with bright blue eyes. He came up after swimming lessons and hugged me. He told me, ‘thank you. I’ll miss you.’ That was when I first knew I wanted to work with young children,” she recalled.
Reflecting on her journey, Genesky emphasized utilizing the resources available at NCC. She urges fellow students to stay on top of their studies, and embrace constructive feedback from professors.
After graduation, Genesky has her sights set on obtaining a bachelor's degree at Arizona State University online. Her goal includes gaining practical experience by working at Reibman Hall Children’s Center on Bethlehem campus as she continues her studies.
