START Hospitality Students Graduate

Their hospitality careers STARTed right here at NCC!

Northampton Community College (NCC) students who completed the START (Skills, Tasks, & Results Training) hospitality workforce training certificate program Tess Dalessio, instructor, Diane Wines, graduate, and Gregg Marzano, START program coorindatorcelebrated at completion ceremonies on May 31 and June 8.

This free program, developed by the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI), is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration. The grant enables residents of Monroe, Carbon, Wayne, Pike, Schuylkill and Luzerne Counties to attend the training at no cost. The curriculum gives high school students and people re-entering the work force the real-world knowledge and skills needed for a long-term career in the lodging industry.

Two completion ceremonies were held to celebrate the success of the 28 students who have completed the program:  one at Northampton Community College Monroe and the other at the Wayne Pike Alliance in Hawley. One of the students, Diane Wines, was laid off before having the opportunity to attend the START program. She is now working at Aquatopia as a guest service attendant and loves it!

"This training program is definitely changing lives and opening doors for students. I had a student tell me she is up for a promotion after only being at the resort for a couple of months," Gregg Marzano, START program coordinator, said. "She said the HR manager lit up when she mentioned she had taken the START training at Northampton Community College."

In order to receive their hospitality workforce training certificate, students completed 200 hours of hospitality instruction and successfully passed the AHLEI final exam, which demonstrates a knowledge of front desk, housekeeping, maintenance, restaurant, and banquet services. In addition, graduates of the program may also have earned their ServSafe, RAMP and Guest Professional certifications.

New START classes will begin on June 26 and will run Mondays through Thursdays, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.  For more information, call 570-369-1948.   View more images from the May 31 celebration in this photo gallery.
