Walking isn’t just a smart form of exercise, but it can help make you smarter.

Walk to Work Day

Walk to Work Day is here, and even in our current situation, we can all take a few minutes out of our day to walk. Whether you walk on the treadmill, around the neighborhood, or the stairs in your house, each step counts! Walking is proven to be a great way to improve your cardiovascular health, strengthen bones, reduce body fat, and boost muscle power. You can reduce your risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and osteoporosis. Even better, you don’t need any fancy equipment or a membership to walk. A good pair of walking shoes is all it takes.  Most of us can walk because it is low impact and you can go at your own pace.  Want to make walking more fun?  Try finding a walking buddy.  Walking with a friend makes walking more enjoyable, but remember for now, keep at least six feet apart!

Did we mention walking gives you better memory and cognitive function?  Clinical trials of patients who were prescribed a daily walking program showed significantly greater improvements in their memory and executive function after just 12 weeks.  Also, studies have shown a greater volume of gray matter, which is a measure of brain health.  That means walking isn’t just a smart form of exercise, but it can help make you smarter.

The Wellness Warriors offer faculty & staff the ability to gear up for the Spartan Sprint through an annual walking program which starts each September.  In addition, if you are interested in walking in local events, a variety of events planned in our area, such as:  Autism Speaks Walk, Light the Night Glow Walk, Mental Health Awareness Walk, and the Superhero Run & Walk.  Please be sure to check the websites for these events to see if they have been postponed or cancelled.

No matter what your skill level is, or your financial situation, you can improve your health through walking.  All you need is a good pair of sneakers and you are on your way.

Happy walking!
