Free Annual Training for Personal Care Home Administrators & Direct Care Staff

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Northampton Community College is conducting Free statewide online training for Personal Care Home staff and administrators and staff licensed agencies serving individuals with intellectual disabilities. The training is funded by the Department of Human Services Bureau of Human Services Licensing and each continuing education class is equal to 3 annual training hours. Participation is limited to staff persons working in Pennsylvania’s licensed Personal Care Homes, Assisted Living Residences, Community Homes for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities, Family Living Homes, Adult Training Facilities and Vocational Facilities for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities.

Diabetes Continuing Education
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all NCC DHS Diabetes Overview classes will be offered online via the Zoom platform. CDE Certified Instructors will be using PowerPoint for the lecture portion of the class and will be demonstrating insulin practical skills. Participants will be required to provide their own supplies to complete the hands-on portion of the class. Preferred training should be at your Personal Care Home. Bloodborne Pathogens
Discussion of issues and concerns related to the existence of bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infections materials in personal care homes will provide opportunity for awareness of policy, procedure and training requirements needed to minimize or eliminate associated risks and hazards. 

Enhancing Customer Service in PC Group
Explore ideas, methods of evaluating your community customer service skills and develop strategies to enhance customer service through proven methods of staff training & leadership skills. 

Food Service & Safety in PC Group
Identifies the risks associated with food safety, factors that affect growth of food-borne bacteria, and methods of prevention. Participants will learn basic food safety requirements for residents in the personal care home and understand practical skills and knowledge necessary for providing care.   Please register for only ONE training session.

Gift of Music in Dementia Care
Explains how music boots brain activity in people, how music specifically impacts people living with dementia, and why and how music can be used to unlock memories of people living with dementia.

Hazard Communication
Provides basic regulatory information related to workplace chemical hazard awareness and the 2012 Hazard Communication Standard. Introduction of the Global Harmonized System (GHS) of labeling, pictograms and safety data sheet requirements are included within the course. 

Infection Control & Wound Care
Participants will learn the fundamentals of infection control with a focus on the personal care facility resident.  Content includes transmission of infections and blood borne pathogens, role of immunizations, and practices to keep residents and staff safe.  Please register for only ONE training session.

Mental Illness & Wellness
Assists staff in development of the Resident Assessment and Support Plan by identifying the needs of the resident with mental illness and developing a plan to meet their specific needs. Case scenarios will allow the participant to build skills to identify red flags and develop interventions that will prevent potential unsafe behaviors from occurring.   Please register for only ONE training session.

Nutrition Health & Wellness
Participants will learn the fundamentals to provide basic nutrition care to residents of a personal care facility including nutrition fundamentals, risk factors that place residents at nutritional risk, strategies for preventing under/malnutrition and appropriate, recommendations/treatment for clients who are identified as requiring a modified meal plan or therapeutic diet.   


Although these classes are being offered free of charge, registration is still required for attendance.
