Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Northampton Community College (NCC) is holding flag raising ceremonies, trivia, and more, along with a co-sponsoring a Hispanic Heritage Celebration on Bethlehem’s Southside. The Hispanic Caucus, vital in the planning of these events, has been a large part of the culture at NCC. It is comprised of faculty and staff at the college advocating for the inclusion and success of Latinx students, staff and community members

NCC along with area organizations proudly celebrates the richness and diversity of the Hispanic culture on September 16 at the Barrio Stage at the Touchstone Theatre, 321 East 4th Street in Southside Bethlehem close to the NCC Fowler Center. From 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. listen to music, enjoy food, participate in activities, and more at this free celebration. For more information, contact Toni at afernandez@northampton.edu.

Monroe and Bethlehem Campuses will hold Hispanic Flag Raising Ceremonies. The Bethlehem campus ceremony will take place on September 19 at 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. in the Quad or in the Student Life Zone if it rains. The Monroe campus ceremony will be held in Pocono Hall 108 on September 28 from 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Come join us for food, music, and lots of hermandad, which means sisterhood/brotherhood, as we raise the Hispanic flag to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month.

On September 26, come out to learn about the “History of Hispanics in the Lehigh Valley” on Bethlehem campus at 11 a.m. in CC 220. Latinx were first attracted to the Lehigh Valley in 1923 when labor recruiters from the bustling Bethlehem Steel Corporation went to Mexico to look for workers willing to come north. Nine hundred and forty-eight Mexican men and women agreed to come to Bethlehem by rail. Today, Latinx in the Lehigh Valley are a racially and economically diverse group of people, including Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Mexicans, Cubans, and Central and South Americans. Learn more about their roots, contributions and role models during this talk.

On October 11, Monroe campus food court will have a food special from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Visit the food court to see what’s being served!

Head to Hispanic Trivia Game Day for an hour of Hispanic trivia Kahoot games and stress relief. You might even learn some Spanish! Snacks and prizes will be available to participants.
