Annual Humanities Program at NCC

Connecting Students and Communities Through Meaningful Dialogue

Northampton Community College established an endowment for the humanities in 2009, initially through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and matching gifts from generous donors.  The genesis for this grant came from the desire to provide for community college students an experience in the humanities comparable to what students at liberal arts colleges and four-year universities experience. Specifically, faculty members’ voiced their dream to bring well-known scholars to campus to be able to engage students in issues and questions of importance.

Each year the endowment funds an annual theme led by a member of the faculty who develops a program of engaging educational events for students, faculty and staff, and our surrounding communities.  Events are open to the public, free of charge.

We the People: Reflecting Back, Building Forward

Our 2025-26 theme is “We the People: Reflecting Back, Building Forward” in honor of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. This program builds upon NCC’s original designation by the National Endowment for the Humanities as a “We the People” institution, a distinction that placed our College among an elite group committed to strengthening the teaching, study, and understanding of American history and culture. NCC is part of the America250PA Lehigh Valley and Monroe County groups, and is planning campus events as well as ways for students, faculty, and staff to join wider regional celebrations. Stay tuned to for how to get involved!
