What Threatens a Democracy? A Conversation on Power & Freedom

Location: College Center, Student Life Zone

Join us for a campus-wide teach-in open to all students, staff, and faculty, where we’ll explore the state of democracy—past and present—and examine the forces that can support or undermine it. Together, we’ll look at the rise of authoritarianism throughout history and discuss how similar patterns may be emerging today.

We will be joined by two political scientists who are experts in the area of democracy and authoritarianism: Sam Rhodes, Ph.D. (Assistant Professor at Moravian University) & Dean Caivano, Ph.D. (Assistant Professor at Lehigh University)

The event will begin with a brief presentation providing historical context and key themes. This will be followed by an open, guided discussion where participants can share thoughts, ask questions, and consider how we, as a community, can better understand the challenges facing democracy.

Whether you're new to the topic or deeply engaged, this is a space for learning, reflection, and conversation.

This event is being hosted in collaboration with the Center for Community, Equity, and Inclusion.
