Winter graduate and commencement speaker, Travis Nugent, pursued a degree in accounting at Northampton Community College (NCC) because he loved balancing numbers, designing spreadsheets, and budgeting. The structure and logic of accounting came naturally to him and laid the groundwork for future goals in bookkeeping and accounting, as he plans to eventually return to school to earn a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.
While building a strong academic foundation in accounting, Nugent discovered an unexpected passion through NCC’s theatre program. After getting involved in campus productions, he found new confidence and community that ultimately led him to pursue a second degree in theatre.
Through his interest in theatre, Nugent uncovered another potential career path. His dream career would be to become a fight choreographer—designing stage combat and teaching actors how to safely perform fights. He describes stunt and fight choreography as some of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of any production, combining storytelling, movement, and trust between performers.
Affordability was a major factor in Nugent’s decision to attend NCC, allowing him to pursue multiple interests without the stress of financial strain. Balancing full-time work, coursework, and year-round theatre productions required discipline and focus. Those challenges helped him develop strong time-management skills.
“Get involved in any way you can,” he says to his fellow NCC students. “There is no role [or job] too small, and every contribution matters.”
