Even the rain couldn’t stop the 65 sprinters that came out to run and walk the 12th Annual Spartan Sprint 5K Run/Walk on September 26. The sprint was held on Northampton Community College’s (NCC) Bethlehem campus where NCC staff, faculty, students, and community members gathered for the event. The race raised $2,395.81 for NCC’s Spartan Aid fund, which helps students with obstacles that stand in the way to completing their education. Since the start of the Spartan Sprint in 2014, hundreds of students have benefited from funds raised during the event. To date, the Sprint has raised over $35,000.
Runners and walkers began near the Oakland Road entrance of the college and ended in front of Kopecek Hall. The top female finisher, Lyan Mahmoud with a time of 20:59, and the top male finisher, Robert Tavarez with a time of 18:59, both received plaques. Other prizes and medals were awarded for top three finishers in each age category.
This year’s race was put on with the assistance of 87 volunteers and one canine volunteer: Pancake. It was the largest number of volunteers to date.
"The 12th running of the Spartan Sprint Run/Walk went off without a hitch in spite of some not so nice weather.” said Beatriz Messina, NCC’s race organizer. “Everyone knew the good cause they were there to support, so participants and volunteers showed up to help. All the funds raised went to the Spartan Aid account which helps students in need with supermarket gift cards, gas cards, help with utility bills, and more.”
Thank you to PSECU Credit Union, the sponsor this year, and Aardvark Sports Shop and Stretch Lab, both of whom donated our raffle prizes.
