Grad Spotlight: Louis Cappetta

Louis Cappetta’s path to graduation at Northampton Community College (NCC) is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to pursue your goals. Enrolling at NCC in his late thirties while supporting a wife and five children, Cappetta chose NCC because it was a local, cost-effective way to complete the first years of college while balancing family and work life.

Originally planning to major in journalism, Cappetta shifted to communication studies after realizing the program offered a broader view of today’s media landscape. He discovered that communication skills are highly transferrable across media, production, and journalism-related careers. He credits the program’s knowledgeable and supportive faculty for creating an environment where students are encouraged to succeed.

Now, at the age of 47, Cappetta will be graduating from NCC and continuing his education at Arizona State University as an online student.

Cappetta says that NCC changed the way he sees himself. “I wasn’t sure I’d be able to do this, but I did. Now I feel like there isn’t anything out of reach for me.” One of the most meaningful parts of his journey has been attending NCC alongside his children— graduating this January with his youngest daughter, Ashleigh.

As two members of the Cappetta family graduate, another one takes her first step toward that same goal. Cappetta’s wife, Janelle, plans to start in NCC’s nursing program for the upcoming spring semester.

His advice to students considering communications: “It’s a fun and exciting major. You meet great people and learn skills that can be used in so many careers.”
