Northampton Community College (NCC) has received a grant from the Community Foundation of Monroe County's ESSA Bank & Trust Legacy Fund for $7,100 to support the newly launched phlebotomy evening training program at the Pocono campus. The grant will allow for the purchase of two blood-drawing training chairs and six training arms.
Phlebotomy training is part of NCC’s Pocono Healthcare Workforce Pathway Initiative, a larger plan to offer expanded short-term, high-demand healthcare training programs at Pocono campus. Grant support addresses a critical infrastructure need by expanding healthcare training capacity in Monroe County.
Well trained phlebotomists are essential to every healthcare community. Phlebotomy, the collection of blood samples for testing, donation, or treatment, is one of the most common procedures performed in medical settings, and phlebotomists interact directly with a high volume of patients each day.
“We are incredibly grateful for the support that helps bring healthcare education to life for our students. Access to phlebotomy chairs and training arms allows students to gain meaningful practice in a realistic environment, building both confidence and competency before they ever step into a clinical setting. By supporting healthcare education, grant partners help prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals. Their investment strengthens our students' learning experiences today and contributes to better care for the countless individuals and families they will serve in the future,” says NCC’s Director of the Center for Healthcare Education, Gwendolyn Coney.
Students will complete 120 hours of class instruction followed by an 80-hour clinical
externship requiring at least 100 successful venipunctures. Graduates are eligible to pursue national certification and employment in hospitals, laboratories, private practices, and other healthcare settings. Coursework will transfer as a three-credit elective toward an associate’s degree, providing a pathway for continued education.
