Why Choose NCC’s Phlebotomy Technician Program?
Launch your healthcare career by enrolling in the Phlebotomy Technician program at Northampton Community College (NCC). In just three months, you’ll graduate with foundational medical knowledge and technical skills to perform blood specimen collection and proper handling and processing.
To ensure you’re fully prepared for this rapidly growing field, our Phlebotomy Technician program combines 120 hours of classroom instruction and lab experience with extensive hands-on training. Then, you must complete a clinical externship with at least 100 successful venipunctures over a minimum of 80 hours. Your education, combined with your clinical experience, will equip you to work immediately as a phlebotomist upon completing the program. You’ll also be eligible for American Medical Technologists (AMT) certification.

Created for career-focused students, NCC’s Phlebotomy Technician program empowers you with foundational medical knowledge, technical skills, and clinical experience to jump-start your professional future.
Through a blend of classroom instruction and hands-on practice, you gain proficiency in:
- Venipuncture and capillary blood collection
- Safety procedures and infection control
- Medical terminology
- Clinical laboratory operations and healthcare systems
- Specimen handling and processing
- Vital signs monitoring (blood pressure, pulse, and respiration)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers
You’ll solidify your clinical skills through experiential learning, which includes:
- 120 hours of lecture and lab instruction
- Clinical externship requiring 100 successful venipunctures completed at a clinical site over a minimum of 80 hours (externships must begin within two months of finishing your classroom instruction)
After completing your phlebotomist training, you’re well-prepared to sit for a national exam and earn your certification.

To be eligible for our phlebotomy program, you must:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Meet enrollment requirements
- Cover the associated program costs
Prior to the first class, you must complete these enrollment requirements:
- Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check
- FBI Background Check
- Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance
- Personal health insurance
- Physical examination and required immunizations
- Influenza vaccine (if externship/clinical is scheduled between September and April)
- COVID-19 vaccine
- Two-step TB skin test or QuantiFERON® blood test
- Urine drug screen (details provided later)
