Graduate Spotlight: Giovanni Failla

Graduating with a degree in secondary education this spring, Northampton Community College (NCC) student Giovanni Failla’s decision to become an educator was shaped through his early involvement in theatre at Whitehall High School. He loved performing productions throughout his high school journey, and after graduating, he returned to assist with stage direction and choreography.

Through mentoring students in theatre, Failla discovered the profound fulfillment that comes from helping young people grow, succeed, and realize their potential. Encouraged by a mentor who explained that this transformative work was the heart of teaching, Failla found his calling in education.

As an Education Ambassador, Failla has played a pivotal role in connecting with prospective students, planning and attending events, and sharing his own educational journey with high school students considering their future. "It’s so rewarding, and I wish I had that opportunity to speak with ambassador when I was in high school,” says Failla.

Failla’s campus involvement showcases his exceptional commitment to academics, leadership, and the arts. He’s been involved with Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and the Honors Program, and he’s held the role of Vice President for both the Education Club and NCC Stage Company. He's also published poetry twice in The Laconic, NCC’s literary and arts magazine.

Theatre remains central to Failla’s identity. At NCC, Failla worked on technical theatre for his first five shows at NCC before stepping into performance roles, including this spring’s Carrie and upcoming summer theatre productions. These experiences have refined Failla’s professional goals. His deepening connection to theatre has inspired him to pursue teaching high school theatre specifically.

Failla’s hard work, academic excellence, and artistic contributions have earned him several prestigious honors, including the Kelley Kissiah Teacher Education Scholarship, the Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Scholarship, and the Norman R. Roberts Theatre Scholarship.

Failla plans to continue expanding his theatre expertise while preparing to transfer to a four-year institution. His long-term aspirations include earning a graduate degree and ultimately teaching at the post-secondary level where he can continue shaping students’ lives through both education and the performing arts.

“I feel like I am a more confident version on myself, and I re-discovered my purpose having been here. I know I can accomplish what I put my mind to because I accomplished so much here. I feel so supported here. I wish this was a four-year college because I don’t want my time to end here!”
